Waichiro Hattori planted olives after cultivating the hills of Ushimado on April 19, 1942. He said that olives are useful as food, medicine and also to light lamps. He established the Nippon Olive Co., Ltd. on June 1, 1949, and released the first product:olive manon virgin oil (now olive manon olive oil for cosmetics).
