245 Olive Oil Big Winner at 2020 NYIOOC

5 years agoBy Olive Oil Times

Greek producer 245 Olive Oil has won a Silver Award for its medium Megaritiki at the 2020 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

"NYIOOC competition means great recognition for every consumer globally. I want to sell my quality olive oil ... abroad, while here, the domestic mass market prefers common cheap olive oils."

George Davaris, Owner, 245 Olive Oil

After learning of the award, owner George Davaris noted the company's successful methods to battle invasive pests in its Megaritiki groves in Attica, Greece.

"One of the biggest challenges here ... is the fly called "dakos." I managed to create BIO traps (yellow bottles containing sulfur ammonia) and drop the acidity to 0.3%. Another big issue was the bad weather and the continuous rain during the harvesting time," Davaris said.

Davaris also noted struggles with low prices on the local market.

"NYIOOC competition means great recognition for every consumer globally. I want to sell my quality olive oil ... abroad, while here, the domestic mass market prefers common cheap olive oils. My product faces many barriers to entry at this moment. Supermarket purchasing departments demand to buy below my harvest costs," he said.

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
