Archidamo III Overcome Climate, Xylella to Win NYIOOC Gold

Italian producer Archidamo III from Italy has won a Gold Award at the 2024 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

The Puglia-based company earned its seventh World Competition award for an organic medium-intensity blend.

"It is always gratifying to see one's efforts recognized," said co-owner Ernesto Maria Buondonno. "This is the fourth year we have won this award, and we are really happy."

The producers behind Archidamo III had to overcome Xylella fastidiosa and challenges presented by climate change to produce award-winning extra virgin olive oil from their 1,600 Coratina, Leccino, Ogliarola and Cellina di Nardò olive trees.

"This year's campaign was challenging," Buendonno said. "We have been facing Xylella fastidiosa for some time."

"But more than anything, this year, the challenge was related to climate change, given the high temperatures reached in the winter and the summer drought," he added. "By practicing organic and sustainable farming, we manage to overcome these problems."
