Hacienda de Colchado Celebrates 8th Straight
Spanish producer Hacienda de Colchado won a Silver Award at the 2023 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's largest olive oil quality contest.
I am very happy, grateful and proud to see that the effort of the whole Hacienda de Colchado team has been worthwhile.
Perfecto Matas, CEO
The Andalusian producer earned its eighth-consecutive award for the Legado brand, a medium-intensity Hojiblanca. Overall, Hacienda de Colcahdo has earned 11 awards at the World Competition since 2016.
"I am very happy, grateful and proud to see that the effort of the whole Hacienda de Colchado team has been worthwhile," chief executive Perfecto Matas said in reaction to receiving the award.
In the 2022/23 crop year, the company used traditional methods to produce 1,000 tons of extra virgin olive oil.
"The biggest challenge we have faced is water," Matas said. "There is no rain and no irrigation water. Agriculture has its natural risks: floods, frost, hail or drought."
"In Andalusia, drought is becoming more and more pronounced and although olive trees are plants that can withstand heat and lack of water, they need it," he added.
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
