4 years agoBy Masha Richart

Nina's Olivar LLC notched a second win for its namesake organic medium blend at the 2020 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition.

The company took a Gold Award for its Arbequina and Manzanilla blend at the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

We are trying to bring permaculture practices of agriculture back to life. [It is a] slow, very slow, process, but we are hoping self-sustainability is what we will get from that practice.

Ardeep (Nina) Khanna, Owner, Nina's Olivar

The owner of the Andalusia-based Spanish producer remarked that the company had grappled with water supply problems during the season.

"Last year we had identified irrigation problems with our installed irrigation system. On top of that, Almeria did not get too much rain, so we had to spend extra ... on water to irrigate our olives," said company owner Ardeep (Nina) Khanna.

Khanna said the award, which was a step up from last year's Silver, "meant a lot."

"Thank you NYIOOC for recognizing the hard work we do in the desert-like province of Spain - Almeria (love you, Almeria). We are trying to bring permaculture practices of agriculture back to life. [It is a] slow, very slow, process, but we are hoping self-sustainability is what we will get from that practice," she said.

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
