Croatian Producer Credits ‘Extra Effort’ in 2nd NYIOOC Win

5 years agoBy Olive Oil Times

OPG Mudrina Skradin, Dusanka Kolar logged its second consecutive year as a winner in the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

The [Gold Award] confirms that we are doing the right thing because our desire is to produce high-quality olive oil on a world scale.

Zeljko Kolar said about the award

This year, the company grabbed a Gold Award for its Mudrina, a medium blend.

The company faced an array of climatological obstacles during the 2019/2020 season, said company owner Zeljko Kolar upon hearing of the award.

"Flowering time is often challenging for our olives due to strong winds, heavy rain in June or, as in 2019, high temperatures that were up to 30 degrees (Celsius). The flower turned yellow abruptly and fertilization was reduced. The high temperatures continued during the summer. We had a harvest from October 17 with smaller quantities," Kolar said.

The company produces extra virgin olive oil from Oblica and Krvavica olives using traditional methods.

"This year we put in the extra effort and we are happy to have won the gold medal. The gold medal confirms that we are doing the right thing because our desire is to produce high-quality olive oil on a world scale. We have decided to grow traditional home-grown varieties and hope to contribute to the diversity of olive oil flavors," Kolar said.

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
